Why it matters!

The Science of Reading—based on decades of research in education, psychology, and neuroscience—tells us that skilled reading doesn’t just “happen.” It’s built layer by layer, starting with some essential pillars that help children become strong, confident readers.

Alphabet Knowledge

Phonological Awareness

Before kids can read words, they need to recognize letters and understand that each letter represents a specific sound. Letters are the symbols of written language. Knowing the names and shapes of letters prepares kids to connect them with sounds—a critical step in decoding words.

This is the ability to hear and play with the sounds in spoken words—like rhyming, clapping syllables, or breaking words into sounds. It helps children understand that words are made of smaller sound parts.

Phonics

Phonics connects sounds (what we hear) with letters (what we see)—teaching kids how to decode written words. It gives children the tools to sound out unfamiliar words on their own. This skill builds reading independence and confidence.

Comprehension

Reading is not just about saying the words—it’s about understanding the message behind them. Even at an early age, children can begin to think about characters, retell stories, and make predictions. Strong comprehension lays the groundwork for future academic success.

Why start early?

Together, these skills form the foundation of literacy. The earlier children are introduced to them in a structured, supportive setting, the more likely they are to thrive when formal reading instruction begins in Kindergarten and beyond. Our Kinder Camp is designed around these pillars, so your child doesn’t just get a head start—they get the right start.
